Ovine Submaxillary Mucin

**Semantic type:** Amino Acid, Peptide, or Protein|Pharmacologic Substance

**Definition:** A naturally occurring mucin glycoprotein. Ovine submaxillary mucin (OSM), extracted from an ovine submaxillary gland, provides a rich source of the sialylated Tn antigen (sTn), which is a carbohydrate antigen found on mucins of many epithelial tumors. Vaccination with OSM may result in the production of antibodies as well as elicitation of a cytotoxic T- lymphocyte (CTL) response against tumor cells expressing sTn, thereby results in decreased tumor cell growth.

**Synonyms:** - Ovine Sialomucin
