Ophthalmic Solution

**Definition:** A sterile solution containing a substance or multiple substances administered to the external eye, usually in the form of droplets. An ophthalmic solution may contain different drugs with different mechanisms of actions, to target symptoms and their underlying cause. Classes of pharmacological agents used may include antibiotics, beta-adrenergic agents, antihistamines, corticosteroids and prostanoids. The ophthalmic solution may be used to treat increased intraocular pressure, symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis, and ocular bacterial infections, among others.
