**Definition:** The third layer of the cerebral cortex, composed of an inner zone of medium sized pyramid-shaped cells with a single apical dendrite extending outward toward the surface and several dendrites extending inward and an outer zone of larger pyramid shaped cells whose dendrites and axons extend beyond this layer.
