Quadratus Lumborum Muscle

**Definition:** A rectangular-shaped muscle of the posterior abdominal wall that takes its origin from the iliac crest and iliolumbar ligament, and inserts on the last rib and transverse processes of the first four lumbar vertebrae; it functions to flex the vertebral column, and also acts as a muscle of inspiration.
