Stapedius Muscle

**Definition:** One of the muscles of the middle ear, and the smallest muscle in the body, which takes its origin from the wall of the pyramidal eminence on the posterior wall of the tympanic cavity, and inserts on the posterior surface of the neck of the stapes; it functions to dampen excessive sound vibrations.
