**Definition:** The anterior section of the primitive gut, which develops during the fourth week of gestation, and forms the pharynx, the lower respiratory system, the esophagus and stomach, the duodenum (proximal to the opening of the bile duct), the liver, the pancreas, and the biliary apparatus.
