**Definition:** A developmentally transient structure comprising paired cuboidal bodies formed from paraxial mesoderm on either side of the developing neural tube, with subsequent pairs forming in a craniocaudal sequence; these structures ultimately differentiate into muscle, bone, and connective tissues of the body.
