**Definition:** Chronic, progressive, debilitating and non-reversible fibrosis of the submucosal tissues of the mouth. It is associated with chewing betel quid, a habit practiced in Southeast Asia and India. It is a precancerous condition and results in rigidity of the jaws and inability of the affected individual to open the mouth.
