Oxidative Phosphorylation Pathway
**Semantic type:** Functional Concept
**Definition:** A metabolic pathway that occurs in the mitochondrion, where the enzymes of the electron transport chain use the energy produced by the oxidation of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and dihydrogenated flavin adenine dinucleotide (FADH2) to pump protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane into the intermembrane space. This creates an ionic gradient that drives adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthase to convert adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and inorganic phosphate (Pi) into ATP.
**Synonyms:** - Mitochondrial Oxidative Phosphorylation - Mitochondrial Oxidative Phosphorylation Pathway - OxPhos - OxPhos Pathway - Oxidative Phosphorylation
