**Definition:** Cervical squamous intraepithelial neoplasia that is usually associated with human papillomavirus infection and is characterized by the presence of mild atypia in the superficial squamous epithelial layer and maturation in the upper two thirds of the epithelium. Mitotic figures are not numerous and are confined to the basal third of the epithelium.
