**Definition:** A malignant hematopoietic cell which may derive from mutations in normal hematopoietic stem cells. Leukemic hematopoietic stem cells can initiate or sustain neoplastic hematopoietic diseases because they are able to both proliferate and give rise to other malignant cells.
