**Definition:** Polycythemia vera characterized by the proliferation of the erythroid, granulocytic, and megakaryocytic lineages. The peripheral blood shows excess of red blood cells, neutrophilia, and thrombocytosis. The bone marrow is hypercellular for the patient's age.
