**Definition:** The noninvasive measurement or determination of the partial pressure of oxygen and carbon dioxide locally in the capillaries of a tissue by the use of sensors applied to the skin. These photoelectric sensors can detect the specific wavelengths of radiation emitted by oxygenated versus reduced hemoglobin.
