Ceforanide
**Semantic type:** Antibiotic|Pharmacologic Substance
**Definition:** A semi-synthetic, broad-spectrum, beta-lactam, second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity. Ceforanide causes inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis by inactivating penicillin binding proteins (PBPs) thereby interfering with the final transpeptidation step required for cross-linking of peptidoglycan units which are a component of the cell wall. This results in a reduction of cell wall stability and causes cell lysis.
**Synonyms:** - (6R-trans)-7-(((2-(Aminomethyl)phenyl)acetyl)amino)-3-(((1-(carboxymethyl)-1H-tetrazol-5-yl)thio)methyl)-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo(4.2.0)oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic Acid - CEFORANIDE - Precef
