**Definition:** The tissue that constitutes the retina. It is composed of the following layers: ganglion cell layer, inner limiting membrane, inner nuclear layer, inner plexiform layer, layer of the ophthalmic nerve fibers, layer of the rods and cones, neural retina, outer limiting membrane, outer nuclear layer, outer plexiform layer, and retinal pigment epithelium.
