**Definition:** Human MPL wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 1p34.2 and is approximately 46 kb in length. This allele, which encodes thrombopoietin receptor protein, plays a role in megakaryocytopoiesis, hematopoesis and platelet formation. Defects in the gene cause congenital amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia.
