This allele, which encodes melanocyte-stimulating hormone receptor protein, is involved in melanocyte-stimulated hormone signaling which controls melanogenesis. Certain allelic variants of the MCR1 gene are associated with susceptibility to UV-induced skin damage and melanoma.
