**Definition:** One of the three parts of the spinalis muscle, which takes its origin from the spinous processes of the upper thoracic vertebrae, and which inserts into the spinous processes of the eleventh and twelfth thoracic and first and second lumbar vertebrae; it functions to support and extend the vertebral column.
