Complete Method of Relative Survival Calculation

**Semantic type:** Research Activity

**Definition:** A calculation that compares the survival of individuals with a specific disease to those without the disease in the general population, providing a measure of the disease's effect on lifespan. It estimates the percentage of patients who would be expected to survive the effects of their disease, assuming that disease is the only possible cause of death. It is calculated by taking the actual percentage of patients still alive at a certain time after diagnosis, considering deaths from all causes, the percentage of people in the general population of the same sex and age who are still alive at the same time period, and dividing the observed survival rate of the patient group by the expected survival rate of the general population.
