**Definition:** A recombinant therapeutic agent which is chemically identical to or similar to the endogenous cytokine interleukin-1 (IL-1). Produced mainly by monocytes, endogenous IL-1 plays a role in hematopoiesis, is a potent stimulator of T-cell activity, may promote or inhibit tumor growth, depending on tumor type. (NCI04)
