Ticlopidine

**Definition:** A thienopyridine derivative with anticoagulant activity. Ticlopidine inhibits adenosine-diphosphate (ADP) binding to its platelet receptor. This prevents ADP activation and inhibits platelet expression of the glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIA receptors, binding of fibrinogen to platelet glycoprotein GP IIb-IIIa and platelet-platelet interaction. This results in increased bleeding time.
