**Definition:** The sodium salt monohydrate form of metamizole, a pyrazolone derivative, with analgesic, antipyretic, and antispasmodic activities. The mechanism of action of metamizole is not fully understood. It is a weak inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-1 and 2 (COX-1 and-2), which blocks the biosynthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. It may also activate the cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptor in the central nervous system (CNS), which may modulate the endocannabinoid system.
