Medicaid

**Definition:** A joint federal and state program that provides assistance with healthcare costs to people with low income and limited resources. Medicaid is run by state and local governments within federal guidelines. Healthcare bills are paid from federal, state and local tax funds. The eligibility for the program does not depend on a person's age. Participating beneficiaries usually pay no part of costs for covered healthcare expenses except a small co-payment required in some cases.
