Colony Forming Unit

**Definition:** The minimum number of separable cells which is able to produce a detectable colony of progeny. Examples of CFU usage include, but are not limited to, the measurement of the number of viable bacteria present in the environment, and the ability of stem cells to produce cells of single or multiple lineages.
