**Definition:** Phosphate-containing lipids that are a major component of all cell membranes. Most phospholipids contain a diglyceride, a phosphate group, and a simple organic molecule such as choline. Another type of phospholipid is phosphosphingolipids that contain sphingosine instead of glycerol.
