Sodium Thiosulfate Anhydrous
**Semantic type:** Inorganic Chemical|Pharmacologic Substance
**Definition:** An anhydrous form of sodium thiosulfate (STS) that can be used to prevent ototoxicity. Upon intravenous administration, STS irreversibly binds to cisplatin and inactivates cisplatin. This prevents cisplatin-mediated irreversible damage to hair cells in the cochlea and reduces cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. In addition, STS may increase intracellular levels of the antioxidant glutathione, thereby preventing the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reducing oxidative stress. This may also reduce ototoxicity.
**Synonyms:** - Disodium Thiosulfate - Pedmark - SODIUM THIOSULFATE ANHYDROUS - Sodium Thiosulfate, Anhydrous - Thiosulfuric Acid, Disodium Salt
