Sevelamer

**Semantic type:** Pharmacologic Substance

**Definition:** A non-absorbable polymeric amine and phosphate binding agent that can be used to prevent hyperphosphatemia. Upon oral administration, the amine groups in sevelamer become protonated in the intestines and bind to the dietary phosphate groups in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, thereby preventing the absorption of phosphate and controlling phosphate plasma levels. In addition, sevelamer, as a phosphate binder, can be used to prevent the absorption of the radionuclide phosphorus P 32 (P-32).
