**Definition:** A species of aerobic or facultatively anaerobic, Gram-positive, rod shaped bacteria assigned to the phylum Firmicutes. This species is motile, spore forming, catalase positive, oxidase positive, does not reduce nitrate, indole positive, and hydrolyzes casein, esculin, gelatin, and starch. B. alvei, also known as Paenibacillus alvei, is found in soil and honeybee colonies, and is one of the causes of European foulbrood disease.
