Citrobacter freundii

**Definition:** A species of facultatively anaerobic, gram negative, rod shaped bacteria assigned to the phylum Proteobacteria. This species is motile by peritrichous flagella, oxidase negative, catalase positive, grows in KCN medium, and successfully ferment sucrose, raffinose and melibiose. C. freundii is most commonly found in water, sewage, soil and food and is an opportunistic pathogen in neonates and immunocompromised patients.
