Fusobacterium varium

**Semantic type:** Bacterium

**Definition:** A species of anaerobic, Gram-negative, fusiform rod shaped bacteria in the phylum Fusobacteria. This species is indole positive, catalase negative, produces propionate from threonine, but not lactate, does not hydrolyze esculin, starch or dextran, and does not reduce nitrate. F. varium has been isolated from human feces and sites of infection as well as the intestinal tract of rodents, roaches, and terminates.
