Haemophilus influenzae

**Definition:** A species of facultatively anaerobic or aerobic, Gram negative, rod shaped bacteria assigned to the phylum Proteobacteria. This species is nonmotile, catalase and oxidase positive, porphyrin negative, requires both X and V factors to grow in culture, and may be encapsulated or nonencapsulated. H. influenzae is an opportunistic pathogen causing a wide variety of infections including osteomyelitis, meningitis, conjunctivitis and pneumonia.
