**Definition:** A species of facultatively anaerobic, Gram negative, rod shaped bacteria assigned to the phylum Proteobacteria. This species is oxidase negative, and ferments glucose, mannitol, and arabinose. H. alvei is found in water, soil and foods, is part of the gastrointestinal flora and is rarely pathogenic owing to the expression of few virulence factors.
