**Definition:** A species of facultatively anaerobic, Gram negative, rod shaped bacteria assigned to the phylum Proteobacteria. This species is motile by peritrichous flagella, catalase positive, oxidase and indole negative, and ferments sucrose, dulcitol and amygdalin. K. intermedia is commonly found in surface water and may be an opportunistic pathogen.
