Kocuria varians

**Semantic type:** Bacterium

**Definition:** A species of Gram positive, cocci shaped bacteria assigned to the phylum Actinobacteria. This species is oxidase negative, urease, nitrate and nitrite reductase positive, forms yellow colonies in culture, nonencapsulated and non spore forming. K. varians is part of the normal flora of the skin but may have pathogenic potential in surgical patients.
