Lactobacillus acidophilus

**Definition:** A species of facultatively anaerobic, Gram positive, rod shaped bacteria in the phylum Firmicutes. This species is nonmotile, homofermentative, indole negative, produces vitamin K, lactase and amylase and does not ferment mannitol. L. acidophilus is a commensal organism of the gastrointestinal tract, mouth and vagina with probiotic activity.
