Parabacteroides distasonis

**Definition:** A species of obligately anaerobic, Gram-negative, rod shaped bacteria assigned to the phylum Bacteroidetes. This species is indole negative, hydrolyzes starch, requires hemin for growth and reduces resazurin but not neutral red. P. distasonis, also known as Bacteroides distasonis, is a very common commensal microorganism in the human intestine, but can be pathogenic, though it is rare.
