**Definition:** A species of aerobic, Gram negative, rod and cocci shaped bacteria assigned to the phylum Proteobacteria. This species is motile, obligatively intracellular and transmitted by a tick host, Amblyomma variegatum. R. africae is a pathogen that is the causative agent of African tick bite fever.
