Streptococcus constellatus

**Definition:** A species of facultatively anaerobic, Gram positive, cocci shaped bacteria in the phylum Firmicutes. This species is positive for alpha glucosidase, esculin hydrolysis, arginine deamination and hyaluronidase and negative for sialidase, urease and catalase. It can ferment salicin, trehalose, lactose and amygdalin but not arabinose, glycerol, mannitol, raffinose, inulin, sorbitol or ribose. S. constellatus is a commensal organism found in the human respiratory tract and an opportunistic pathogen that can cause abscesses.
