Protein C Concentrate
**Semantic type:** Pharmacologic Substance
**Definition:** A concentrate of protein C, a vitamin K-dependent, heterodimeric plasma glycoprotein and serine protease that is normally synthesized in the liver, that can be used as an anticoagulant in patients with congenital protein C deficiency. Upon intravenous administration, protein C concentrate replaces missing endogenous protein C. Protein C is converted by the thrombin/thrombomodulin-complex on the endothelial cell surface to activated Protein C (APC). APC inactivates factors Va and VIIIa, which leads to a decrease in thrombin formation. APC also has profibrinolytic effects. The protein C pathway plays an important role in the regulation of blood coagulation.
**Synonyms:** - Ceprotin - PROTEIN C - Protein C (Homo sapiens) - Protein C Human - Protein C human - Protexel
