Lercanidipine Hydrochloride

**Semantic type:** Pharmacologic Substance

**Definition:** The hydrochloride salt form of lercanidipine, a dihydropyridine and a calcium antagonist, with anti-hypertensive activity. Upon administration, lercanidipine selectively inhibits the influx of extracellular calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle cells. This results in the relaxation of vascular smooth muscle, vasodilation, and decreased total peripheral resistance, thereby lowering blood pressure.
