**Definition:** Human BMP4 wild-type allele is located within 14q22-q23 and is approximately 7 kb in length. This allele, which encodes bone morphogenetic protein 4, plays a role in cartilage and bone formation, mesoderm induction, tooth development, and limb formation. Mutation of the gene is associated with microphthalmia syndromic type 6 and non-syndromic orofacial cleft type 11.
