**Semantic type:** Disease or Syndrome
**Definition:** A reactive (non-neoplastic) hyperplastic process affecting the esophageal squamous epithelium that is caused by inflammation. Morphologically it involves more than 15% of the thickness of the esophageal squamous epithelium. Its association with an increase risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma remains controversial.
