Pegloticase

**Semantic type:** Amino Acid, Peptide, or Protein|Pharmacologic Substance

**Definition:** A recombinant modified mammalian urate oxidase (uricase) conjugated to monomethoxypolyethylene glycol (mPEG), that can be used to lower serum uric acid. Upon intravenous infusion, pegloticase catalyzes the oxidation of uric acid to allantoin, thereby lowering serum uric acid. Allantoin is an inert and water-soluble purine metabolite; it is readily eliminated, primarily by renal excretion.
