**Definition:** Human SSX1 wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of Xp11.23 and is approximately 12 kb in length. This allele, which encodes protein SSX1, may play a role in the modulation of transcription. Both translocation t(X;18)(p11.2;q11.2) of the gene and the SS18 gene and translocation t(X;20)(p11;q13.3) of the gene and the SS18L1 gene are associated with synovial sarcoma.
