Sec 605A - Identity Theft Prevention - Fraud Alerts
Section 605A of the Fair Credit Reporting Act establishes procedures for fraud alerts to help prevent identity theft. It allows a consumer who suspects misuse of personal information to request a temporary alert on their credit file, requiring credit reporting agencies to notify any future users of the report and to provide the consumer with a free copy of the report after an alert is placed. This alert remains in effect for 90 days, or longer if an extended alert is approved.
