School Officials with Legitimate Educational Interest (99.31(a)(1))

Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (20 USC 1232g), a "school official with legitimate educational interest" is any employee, contractor or volunteer who needs to review a student's education records to fulfill a professional duty related to the student's education, such as teaching, counseling, administration or health services. Access is permitted only when the official can demonstrate that the information is necessary to perform that specific function.
