4.1 Understanding the organization and its context

Clause 4.1 of ISO 14001:2015 requires an organization to identify and analyze internal and external factors that affect its environmental management system, including legal, technological, social, and market influences. It also calls for recognition of interested parties, their expectations, and how these elements shape the scope and objectives of the EMS. This understanding forms the foundation for planning and continual improvement.
