Carbon tetrachloride is listed in the Montreal Protocol as a controlled ozone-depleting substance; it was widely used as a solvent and in fire-extinguishing agents but was phased out because its release destroys stratospheric ozone. The protocol mandates strict limits on production and consumption, with most countries having ceased its commercial use.
