Contiguous zone (24 nautical miles)
The contiguous zone is a maritime area extending up to 24 nautical miles from a coastal state's baseline, where the state may exercise control to prevent or punish infringements of its customs, fiscal, immigration, or sanitary regulations and to enforce laws against pollution. This zone lies beyond the territorial sea but within the exclusive economic zone, allowing the state limited sovereign rights for specific enforcement purposes.
