Rights over the continental shelf
The entry defines a coastal State's exclusive right to explore and exploit the natural resources of its continental shelf, which may extend 200 nautical miles from the baseline or farther where the shelf naturally continues. It grants jurisdiction over seabed activities while preserving other States' freedom of navigation and overflight above the shelf. These rights are balanced by obligations to protect the marine environment and to cooperate with the International Seabed Authority.
